The Fountain

A couple days ago, Brent and I went to see the movie The Fountain. It was a really beautiful movie and definitely really cool but... completely incomprehensible. The trailer as well as the general synopsis you can find in magazines that review it implies that it takes place over 1000 years from 1500 to 2500. I definitely got the impression that it took place in 2006 with a made up story in 1500 and some sort of symbolic afterlife experience in 2500... or something. I don't know. Anyway, here's the trailer:

I wanted to put up some screen shots that I found online too, partly because they're beautiful pictures and partly because I want to give you an idea of how little sense this movie makes:

It's a very philosophic movie that, perhaps, would have made more sense if the synopsis of the movie wasn't "A man who tries to save his wife as a conquistador in 1500, a doctor in 2006, and an astronaut in 2500." Either I totally didn't get the movie, or the writers would be horrified that people thought Hugh Jackman's metaphysical character living in a bubble with the tree of life was an astronaut.

Anyway, has anyone else seen it? Does anyone understand it? If so, please comment and explain. Thanks!

You Fight Like A Penguin

So, after all the Thanksgiving festivities, I thought it would be fun to get our friends together again before we all go back to college. Molly, Cathy, Ali, and Vanessa came over to my house on Friday to watch scary movies. We rented Stay Alive and The Omen. Stay Alive was sorta weird and not too scary in my opinion, but what can you expect from a horror movie starring Frankie Muniz. The basic idea of the movie is that through some sort of magical haunting of a video game, everyone dies the way their video game character dies. The Omen was better, I think, but very typical of that kind of movie. If you've seen one Catholic church horror movie, you've seen them all. It still made us scream a couple times, though. What I liked the best was the use of the color red. Most of the scenes were very drab (it took place mostly in London in the Winter) but there would always be one or two bright red things somewhere. An interesting fact about the movie, though, is that the little kid who played Damien didn't know that his character was supposed to be possessed by the devil because the director thought he was too young to understand.

Anyway, here's an artistic representation of the night since I didn't use my camera.

Molly (with her sprained foot), Cathy, Ali, Me, and Vanessa:

I'm definitely going to miss everyone, but we'll be home soon for Christmas!

Last night, my family went over to Cathy's family's house. Our families haven't gotten together for a really long time so it was nice to see everyone again. Cathy, Mike, Katie (Mike's friend), and I watched "Rob & Big" while playing Uno, drinking juice boxes and enjoying a delicious apple pie made by Cathy.

Jake, their dog, has an adorable little Santa outfit (the picture quality is really bad because they were taken with my camera phone):

Anyway, as the night progressed, Cathy and Mike got into some sort of fight in which Mike hit cathy "like a penguin." I don't think I need to explain, just think about it... yes, that's it. Cathy hit him back and then Mike threw Cathy backwards where she fell on top of a giant empty TV box and fell right through. It was one of the funniest things I have ever seen and I didn't have my camera!! Oh well, maybe next time....

That's all for now! I have to get back to school this afternoon, but I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving Weekend!

Salem

This past weekend, Brent and I went to Salem, Massachusetts on a little day trip. College is boring during the day, seriously. Anyway, it was a lot of fun even though the town was really dead. There were seriously hardly any people walking around.

Salem Witch Museum (we looked around the gift shop but didn't take the museum tour):

Statue (there was another statue of Samantha from "Bewitched" but I unfortunately didn't get a picture of it):

Some important house... I don't remember:

Squirrel under a bench:

I don't know what kind of bird this is, but it was making car alarm noises which was weird:

Old advertising on the bricks:

Brent:

Creepy Voodoo dolls:

Some building:

I don't know what this is:

London Coffee House:

Brent outside of Red's Sandwich Shop where we ate brunch:

Red's had delicious food and is apparently rated in a bunch of different publications as a "local gem," etc.

I liked the little cream container:

Creepy picture of Brent:

Cute picture of Brent:

Brent on a bench (he humors me with a lot of useless pictures):

The Broom Closet:

A hideous picture of me with a broom:

Derby Square Bookstore:

I'm sure you can see the stacks of books through the windows.... It was actually terrifying. Brent walked in and jumped when some man sitting behind the "counter" who was peeking through a little tiny opening in the stacks of books said hi to him. Anyway, here are more pictures:

Funny sign:

Me as a witch:

Brent as a witch:

Salem Witch Village:

I made Brent pretend to be climbing up the ladder with the pirates:

Brent and I went to the Pirate Museum because Brent loves pirates. Here are the pictures I took:

The Burying Point:

Wow, I have way too many graveyard pictures. Here's a map of the graveyard:

And zoomed in for those of you who care:

Hawthorne's wife's house:

Cool building:

Last graveyard picture, I promise:

Town Hall:

Cool door:

Horse-drawn carriage:

Brent and I got extremely lost on the way home from Salem and somehow ended up in Marblehead, MA where my dad grew up! Here are some pictures of Marblehead:

On the long road back to the highway (we got extremely lost) we got a lot of pretty sunset pictures in various places:

Boston, as seen from the highway:

That's all, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!

Brent Freaking Out

You won't understand the title of this entry until the end... I'm saving the best for last.

First, here are a lot of random pictures.

Cool brick alley in West Hartford:

Brent and I went to a restaurant called the Texas Roadhouse. We had never been before, but it was new in Hartford so we gave it a try. They have giant steaks that you can pick out yourself and have menu items like the "Big Hoss Steak" and "Roadkill." The funniest part of the whole experience, though, was the fact that there was nothing particularly Texan about the Texas Roadhouse. There was a mural of Mark Twain on the Mississippi River, there were Nascar drawings... but Texas? I don't know, whatever. They had delicious steak and ribs and that's what matters.

Texas Roadhouse:

Lots of Peanuts:

Roadkill on the Menu:

Pick your own steak:

Jackalope (I've been told these are mythological creatures, I was very disappointed):

Cactus:

Brent:

Nascar:

Businessmen sitting in front of the Mark Twain mural:

Now back to some more random stuff...

Pretty picture of the moon:

Brent:

Brent eating the cheddar beer chips my mom gave us (it sounds gross, but it's actually pretty good!):

View from Starbucks in West Hartford (I like the church through the alley):

Brent wearing the most adorable pajamas EVER from J-Crew:

Now to embarrass brent even more... You know those slideshows where you think it's cute pictures but then it's something scary that screams at you? I showed one to Brent and managed to catch his reaction on my camera. At the end, you can see him try to hit me with a pillow right before I turned the camera off:

Priceless.

Homecoming Weekend

I have to admit, I did a terrible photojournalism job on Homecoming Weekend. I managed to miss taking pictures of 1. the football game and 2. parties, thus missing the essence of Homecoming Weekend. Anyway, here's what I did manage to take.

Drunk kids always write on my white board in some weird language. Can anyone translate for me?

Gallows Hill:

My boyfriend looks like he's homeless, someone give him a dollar (make sure you don't miss the hobo gloves):

This isn't Wesleyan:

A cool wooden door to the back of our chapel:

Looking up over the main quad at Jarvis, the dorm that Brent and I lived in Freshman year (that's where we met!):

That's all! New pictures coming soon!

Our Puppy Razzle/Bowie

If you've read my "Our Pet Squirrel" entry, you know that Brent and I tend to adopt random pets around town, probably because we miss our own pets from home =(

Anyway, at the Puppy Center in Hartford, you can pick a puppy from one of the big puppy pens and you can take it to the "play pen" and play with the puppy for as long as you want. Brent and I picked a huskie named Razzle that has two different colored eyes. Apparently David Bowie also has two different colored eyes so Brent insisted that we rename our puppy Bowie. Anyway, she's adorable and we love her.

Razzle/Bowie:

Trying to eat my shoe:

Razzle/Bowie and Me:

Brent with Razzle/Bowie:

On another note, did anyone else not realize that today was Tuesday? Of all the possible days for today to be, Tuesday would have been my last guess.

Here's a completely random set of pictures I've been meaning to put up for a while.

A hawk that landed right outside my window (picture taken by Brent):

Me looking at Brent through the peephole on my door:

"Junk in the Trunk" (Brent gets credit for the name of this picture):

Sunset in downtown Hartford:

The sunset and its reflection in the hood of Brent's car:

Halloween

So I finally have my Halloween pictures online. Cathy and Pat came to visit and we spent the beginning of the night in my room and then went over to the frats. Cathy was a teacher, Pat was her nerdy student, I was a cop, and Brent was Dwight from "The Office."

Brent and Pat:

Cathy was a mean teacher:

I think what's more disturbing is how many pictures exactly like this Cathy and I have together.

Cathy and Pat:

Brent and Me:

Pat and Cathy:

80s Party

Every year, Trinity has an 80s party (my favorite party of the whole year) where everyone gets decked out in their best 80s garb and dances to 80s power pop all night long.

A really awkward and unattractive picture of me taken by Brent:

My 80s outfit:

My ridiculous, poofy leopard-print shirt should not be confused with my decade-appropriate leopard-print cardigan, as featured in "Fall Concert."

Brent's 80s outfit (not to be confused with his favorite pajama shirt... oh wait, yes those are his pajamas... Brent, you're lazy):

Brent and Me:

I look distracted...

80s Party:

Brent and Me at the party:

It was a long night that, needless to say, led to an unfortunate morning. Not that I would ever drink alcoholic beverages since I'm underage, but I would advise against cheap Russian vodka. If it costs $8 and comes in a plastic bottle... just say no.

Our Pet Squirrel

So the rule here at Trinity is that you can't have pets except "fish tank pets." To me, that means I should be allowed to have a chihuahua (it's smaller than lots of fish!), but no one seems to agree with me so I've been forced to limit my pets to outdoor ones. Brent and I adopted a squirrel that lives in a tree near our dorm to fulfill our need for an adorable, furry pet. His name is Wooly and he uses his big puffy tail as a blanket when it's cold out which is absolutely adorable. Here are some pictures of Wooly and then I promise I'll put up some party pictures next time:

Greenwich, Golf, and Pumpkins

Over a long weekend in October, Brent came home to Greenwich with me. I had a terrible cold so I hope you'll excuse the appearance of my face in the pictures. Anyway, the first day there, Brent and I played golf with my dad. It was my first time playing golf and I don't remember my score, but I do know that I got a 17 on a par 3 hole. In normal sports, the high score wins, so I think I did pretty well!

Brent getting mad that I was taking his picture:

Brent and Me:

Me annoying Brent again:

On the drive back to my house, we passed a farm that had donkeys (pictures taken by Brent)!

The next day, Brent and I went to Jones' Farm to pick out pumpkins. What's funny about Jones' Farm is that Brent and I both have been going there since we were really little kids, so we figure we probably bumped into each other at some point.

Pumpkin patch:

Hay-ride to the actual pumpkin patches:

Jones' Farm is also where we get our Christmas trees. Here they are getting ready for December!

I really liked this lady's shirt:

I think that's an actual dollar bill:

And finally, pictures of my cat (Frisky) and dog (Chloe) taken by Brent:

Nothing Very Interesting

I'm still trying to get caught up on blog entries, so here are some of the random pictures I took one night sometime in October.

The pumpkin Brent got me:

Outside my dorm, the moon and the clouds in the sky were really beautiful so I took a few pictures:

A jet going by the moon:

More fun party pictures coming soon!

Fire Box

So, for those of you who read my last entry, there was a picture of a red fire box on a wall. My dad read my blog entry while I was home this past weekend and was very excited to tell me that it was actually designed by my grandfather! Grandpa was a very important designer, he designed for Steuben and did a lot of other everyday things like the Junior Mints box! Anyway, here's Grandpa's fire box again:

While I'm talking about this past weekend, my dad and I went to l'escale on Friday night where we had a delicious dinner. They had a $110 appetizer! We didn't get it but I bet it was really good. Anyway, definitely try it if you're in Greenwich.

That's all for now, I have to write a paper on Jihad vs. McWorld by Benjamin R. Barber. If anyone knows anything about it, please comment!!

Tropical

One of the frats here at Trinity, Psi U, has a Tropical party every year that's actually rated as one of the top 5 college parties in America. Obviously I went and had a great time, so here are the pictures!

Brent, Julie, and Kara in my room:

Sometimes after a few drinks, taking awkward candid shots in sepia seems artistic. It's not. Here are my pictures of Brent:

Brent's pictures of me:

Classy, Brent...

There's something very unnatural-looking about Brent's legs in this picture and they really freak me out:

Brent's accessories:

The "swimming pool." Every year they put sea "life" in it. Life in quotes because it obviously dies immediately. At least Brent didn't jump in this time...

Some random stuff that I thought looked cool on the walk back to the dorms:

Brent and Justin:

And finally... Brent with a bunch of stuffed animals (he probably won't be too happy with me for putting this up, but I don't care):

That's all! I think everyone should come visit me next year, so mark your calendars!

The Big E Fair

Sometime late September or early October (I've lost track of time completely) Brent and I went to The Big E Fair. I know that makes us huge losers, but that's ok, we were bored. We saw all sorts of farm folk, ate lots of food, and took tons of pictures.

Brent starting out the day with a caramel apple:

Then a cheesesteak from Butcher Boys (eww):

Giant snowmobile:

Boots:

Some lady making pastries:

Super dogs:

Check out the size of that man's corn dog:

Bears:

Watch as the lighter brown colored bear tries to make an escape through the roof:

I tried to take this picture to make it look like the bear in the background was mauling Brent's head, but he made a stupid face and ruined it:

Brent and I played the water gun game at the carnival part of the fair and Brent won me this adorable stuffed dog named Oatmeal:

Sword display:

We went to the Harvest Kitchen to watch cooking displays. The first one was the Sauce Boss which we caught the end of:

We wandered around a while longer and ended up sharing a giant cream puff while we waited for Cafe Lebanon to come on so that we could learn how to cook Lebanese food.

Yum:

Pretty fans:

People singing about Jesus:

Our giant cream puff:

Cafe Lebanon:

There were giant screens so that the audience could watch what was happening on the counter and the stove:

After learning all about Lebanese food, we watched a parade.

What's Grange?

Oh wow:

Segways:

Do people still own tractors?

Clidesdale Horses:

Following the farm parade there was the, slightly out of place, Mardi Gras parade:

This guy carves things out of logs with a chainsaw:

I'm not sure what this is:

Wow:

Wagons:

Blacksmith:

Someone made a replica of Fenway Park and Boston out of cards:

Pretty sky:

Brent won a poster doing pull-ups:

On the way home we went over this beautiful bridge somewhere in Springfield, MA I think:

That's it for the Big E Fair. I didn't know such a thing existed in New England, but now I know where to go to celebrate "Grange."

Full Moon

For those of you who don't leave your homes after dark, there was a full moon last night. Brent and I went to the movies to see The Prestige in Simmsbury, CT last night (good movie, by the way) and afterwards Brent took me for a drive in Farmington to show me the condo he and his parents lived in while their house in Avon was being built. We never did find the condo, it was dark and he hasn't lived there in years, but that didn't make the trip any less exciting. Brent and I got a little lost out in some farmlands. Strangely enough, we were actually only a few yards away from the actual street we wanted to be on when we turned around and headed back. Anyway, keep in mind that this is relatively late at night because we had seen a late movie, so there weren't any other cars on the road and there was no sign of people anywhere... except in a glowing red shed in the backyard of some sort of farm house. Past a long stretch of field, Brent and I noticed a red light coming out from behind some trees. We drove closer and discovered that it was coming out of a giant window in a shed in someone's backyard. The window had an enormous star on it and inside there were people sitting around a table, silently staring at something. It was probably one of the creepiest things I've ever seen and we drove by VERY quickly. I think the image is probably better left to the imagination, but I drew it to give you an idea of what this shed looked like:

On the drive back towards school, Brent and I were on a scenic drive in Farmington with old houses and stone churches on either side. While really beautiful, that's sorta creepy too. As we were driving, we saw the black silhouette of a wolf. When we got closer and the headlights hit it, it was, in fact, a lone wolf walking across the street right in front of us. It reached the other side, stopped, turned around, and watched us drive past. It was one of the most amazing slash terrifying things I've ever witnessed. I've never seen a wolf up close, especially not a wild wolf wandering through the suburbs of Hartford, CT. It was a real wolf, not a huskie, not a coyote, I've seen those up close, this was a wolf. Maybe it wouldn't have been so weird if it hadn't been a full moon, or if I hadn't watched years of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and know all about werewolves... yes, I'm that cool. I guess that concludes my little full moon story. If anyone else has a fun full moon story from last night or any other full moon, please share!

Fall Concert

This is obviously a much overdue blog entry since the Fall Concert was at the end of September, but here it goes. Late Night Uproar (Jon's band, they've been on The Blonde Excuse before), Lights Resolved, and Phantom Planet. I took lots of pictures as usual...

Late Night Uproar:

I thought this picture came out kinda cool:

So did this one:

Lights Resolved:

Brent and I left before Lights Resolved were done and hung out on the benches by the library for a few minutes to get away from the deafeningly loud speakers.

Phantom Planet:

Someone from the audience handed him a beer to which he replied "Thank you little girl, I hope you're of age," which I'm sure she wasn't:

Phantom Planet videos...

"Always On My Mind" (one of my favorite songs):

"Wishing Well":

"California" (better known as the theme song to "the OC"):

They were amazing and it was definitely one of the best Fall concerts here at Trinity.

Well, that's all I've got! Hope you enjoyed it, I definitely missed blogging this past month. Hope everyone's November got off to a good start!

How I Broke My Tailbone

So, while I wait for Google Video to be the slowest video hosting site EVER with my concert videos, I thought I'd share my tailbone story.

It all started with Brent being an idiot and me doing my "storming out" thing. Storming out and slamming doors are two of my specialties. Anyway, to make it more dramatic, I obviously couldn't stop and take the time to change from slippers to actual shoes, so I powerwalked off in a huff (you can't run when you're storming out, that's just lame). I made it outside and got distracted in my storming by seeing Brent angrily walking to class without even chasing after me! Boys don't know ANYTHING. Anyway, I was wearing one of my famous mini-skirts (yes Cathy, like the one I wore to my Harvard interview...) and was passing a group of guys while looking over my shoulder at Brent and managed to step on a storm drain covered in slippery leaves... in my slippers. Yes, I slipped in my slippers on slippery leaves, my legs went straight up in the air and I landed directly on my tailbone with my skirt now up around my chest. And that, vast readership, is how I broke my tailbone.

I'm Back

So, I obviously haven't been blogging a whole lot lately... I apologize to all my faithful readers, but I've had a series of crises lately including a severe sinus infection slash bronchitis causing me to miss a whole lot of classes (of course leading to lots of make-up work), then I broke my tailbone and have been high on Vicodin since sometime early October... hence my lack of blog entries. Anyway, I have a LOT to get caught up with and I promise at least some of it will be somewhat entertaining. Hope everyone had a great Halloween!
