The Fountain

A couple days ago, Brent and I went to see the movie The Fountain. It was a really beautiful movie and definitely really cool but... completely incomprehensible. The trailer as well as the general synopsis you can find in magazines that review it implies that it takes place over 1000 years from 1500 to 2500. I definitely got the impression that it took place in 2006 with a made up story in 1500 and some sort of symbolic afterlife experience in 2500... or something. I don't know. Anyway, here's the trailer:

I wanted to put up some screen shots that I found online too, partly because they're beautiful pictures and partly because I want to give you an idea of how little sense this movie makes:

It's a very philosophic movie that, perhaps, would have made more sense if the synopsis of the movie wasn't "A man who tries to save his wife as a conquistador in 1500, a doctor in 2006, and an astronaut in 2500." Either I totally didn't get the movie, or the writers would be horrified that people thought Hugh Jackman's metaphysical character living in a bubble with the tree of life was an astronaut.

Anyway, has anyone else seen it? Does anyone understand it? If so, please comment and explain. Thanks!

The director is my absolute favorite, Darren Aronofsky is a genius. That said, try renting Pi and Requiem for a Dream. They are his master pieces.

We saw it last Friday and I completely agree with you - wha? I mean, I get that they're all feeding from the tree of life and they want more than their part but why be so freaky-deaky about it? Why do we need a man in lotus pose in a bubble floating in outer space to grasp this? No surprise why Brad Pitt bailed.

I agree with Joc: go see Pi. Much better.

I wanna be on what they were on when this was written. I think i would have "gotten it"

Ps.. hows the mascara test?

I think I'll start saying "HI TIM" here too.. atleast until he acknowledges me..

sigh @ unrequited love.

Hi Cupcakes-

Yes, they were definitely "on" something when that was written... Anyway, the mascara test results are in: Bobbi Brown is definitely more appropriate daytime mascara and perhaps a bit more waterproof (not that mascara is EVER waterproof....) but Bad Gal Lash definitely has the best results for long, curled, dramatic eyelashes.
