Diagnose Me
I figured I'd share this with all of you because maybe you'll have some ideas for me. Anyway, starting exactly two weeks ago, I've been passing out (well, nearly passing out) quite frequently. It starts with a fuzzy feeling in my head, almost like a really severe "head rush," and if I don't immediately stand up and walk around to get some air, I'll pass out. That's the strangest part about it... that I feel less like I'm going to faint if I stand up, and more like I'm about to pass out when I'm sitting down and very relaxed.
I've been to the ER twice and seen a cardiologist and a neurologist with no luck. My other minor symptoms include a strange taste in my throat/back of my mouth, pressure in my head, brief very sharp pains in the top-right portion of my head and behind my eyes, and something I call "roller-coaster head" (the feeling you get when you've been on a roller coaster one too many times and your brain feels like it's been jostled around to the point of disconnecting from your skull and has nothing better to do than bang against the inside of your head with even the slightest movement). OK, so I've definitely made this sound like it's a migraine, but it isn't. I've had migraines a couple times before and this is very distinctly not a migraine - mostly because my head doesn't "hurt" for the most part.
One other interesting tidbit of information that may or may not be helpful to those of you actively trying to diagnose me right now (who doesn't love a good project?) is that when I get these "pressure headaches" (which aren't really headaches, but just "pressure" sounds too vague) they seem to be focused in my temples and - here's the weird one - between the two sides of my jaw and across the roof of my mouth. Is it possible to have a severe pressure headache across the roof of one's mouth? Well, I do.
And last but not least, my newest symptom is that last Thursday, I felt really lightheaded (like I always do, now) and I sensed it getting worse, then I suddenly got this sharp pain that pulsed from my head all the way down to the tips of my toes. It literally felt like an electric jolt. I know this, because I once stuck my toe in my dad's electric putting ball return machine and it gave me a pretty good shock that ran all the way from my toe up to my fingertips.
That being said, all my bloodwork is normal (no infection, normal blood levels of all kinds), I had a head CT that came out normal, I've had 4 EKGs that came out normal, my blood pressure is normal, my pulse rate is normal (even during my fainting spells), and I just had an ultrasound of my heart taken and that looks normal as well. Basically, I have everyone stumped!
This has been going on now since February 5th and I'm really ready to be over it but no one seems to be able to help me. I figured maybe one of my faithful blog readers would have some idea (I'm much more inclined to trust the advice of some random person I don't know who knows someone who knows someone who had the same thing, than I am to trust a medical specialist).
Anyway, please write in with any ideas! I'd appreciate any help anyone might be able to provide!
Here's me modeling my hospital gown at the ER (doesn't it look cute with my Marc Jacobs bag?):

Here's Brent who has been amazing and has taken me to all my appointments and unexpected ER visits and waited with me for hours and hours with nothing to do:

I promise to do my best to keep up with posting but it hasn't been easy juggling school, homework, and a myriad of special medical appointments and tests along with keeping up with my blog.
Don't forget to write in if you have ANY ideas! I really appreciate any thoughts you might have!

Well I'm just a first year nursing student, so I probably don't have too much to contribute, but it sounds like something wrong with your Central Nervous System (brain/spinal cord). But if your CT scan came back fine, I don't know...? Possibly something wrong with your thyroid?
That is really scary though and i hope they figure out what is going on with you. Feel better :)

i dont have any idea... but.. ack !! My Bf's Dad is some big shit at LSU Med School and I will def copy this and see what I can dig up. May take a couple days but hes usually pretty prompt with answering when he can. He knows im kind of a head case with self diagnosing... at one point last year youd think i had every major disease goin on.. when in fact it was just a splinter.. of course im kidding, but you get the idea.
The thing christine said about the thyroid... I was found to have that issue ( this was the last year thing) and my only real symptoms was that i was effing tired all-the-time.. oh, and my hair started to fall out.. oh and i was having panic attacks.. its so weird how something so small had such an effect.. the upside was i got a scrip for 10mg valium for anxiety!! (holla)
I'm sure since we are all loyal and faithful readers, you'll keep us posted!! RIGHT?!?
Take care girlie.

I have had some similar problems - but not as severe. I mentioned it to my dentist and he feels that a lot of medical problems start with the teeth. I was grinding and clenching my teeth, which caused mouth aches, head aches etc. Probably not your problem, but I thought I'd mention it. Where is Dr. House when we need him.

that all sounds so bad. I believe in people helping each other so someone can give you a clue. G

Yes! I agree with Aunt Susan! I had major problems before I had my wisdom teeth out, including getting migraines ALL the time. I haven't had a migraine since having them out.

Christine - I think you might be right about the thyroid. I've been getting laryngitis on and off for a couple weeks and I feel like I have a big lump in my throat sometimes and I get this weird sore throat that almost feels like it's in my neck rather than my throat... but it's not a neck-ache... I have such random symptoms, I know. I made an appointment to have my thyroid checked this afternoon!
Cupcakes - Thank you so much for sending my problem along! I always like getting advice from different doctors who might have a new perspective.
Aunt Susan - I think you're right, part of my head/jaw issue might be my teeth. I DEFINITELY have a big problem with grinding my teeth, so that's probably responsible for some of the "pressure" I was describing.
G - You're definitely right and everyone is being so helpful!
Jocelyn - I don't have wisdom teeth anymore so it can't be that, but I think it might be partly from my teeth-grinding.
Thanks everyone! Keep the ideas coming, they're all really helpful!

Hi Lauren!
I also used to grind my teeth and had a "bite guard" made to sleep at night with...it totally helped my headaches and jaw aches. Also, my girlfriend used to get that really light headed feeling if she didn't eat every couple house and it turned out she had low blood sugar. I know you said your test came back normal but you never know. I hope you feel better soon!!!

Have they ruled out gyclemia? Are you lightheaded when you haven't had anything to eat? Also, a friend of mine had something sort of similar and realized the culprit was anxiety. Stress can do strange things to your body/nervous system. Good luck and feel better!

I also had a "bite guard" made for night. It made a huge difference. No more teeth aches, and no more head aches centered around my temples. Might be worth a try. I also have had bouts of dizziness over the past 10 years. Very strange feelings. First time it happened, I woke Uncle Les and asked if we were having an earth quake. Maybe this sort of thing runs in the family.

I have nothing new to say because I've exhausted all of my medical ideas over the past two weeks, but it's so nice seeing so many people comment and try to help and I'm glad you've got a solid lead on the thyroid thing.
I love you.

I'm sorry to hear that you are not feeling good. Hope the doctors figure it out soon.

I would keep bugging a neurologist to do more tests. There a lot of different kind of seizures, not just the big kind, that are very similar to what you describe. But neurological conditions can be very hard to diagnose.

I had something similar happen about 7 or 8 years ago. It turned out to be a weird form of migraines that I have never had since. I didn't believe it when they told me they were migraines, since my head didn't really hurt, I just had weird symptoms like half my body would go numb, I wouldn't be able to move my tongue- seriously weird symptoms! Luckily they went away and I haven't had any problems for awhile- knock wood. I hope your issues disappears just as quickly!

Sorry you are not feeling too well. I get the very light-headedness sometimes as well but never any real "pain" anywhere. I would also suggest that this could be your Thyroid as mine is/was with a severe case of low blood pressure all the time. I know we girls all like to keep a trim figure, but remember to eat a little bit every few hours. Try try flexing your feet up and down like your stretching out your calves, this can lessen the dizzie-ness quickly.

Thank you so much everyone for writing in! You've actually been amazingly helpful! After reading Christine's comment about my thyroid, I went to my student health center to get it tested and the woman I saw said that my thyroid IS swollen and abnormal. I'm waiting to hear back from the blood tests, and I'll be sure to keep you all posted.
Thanks again for the great ideas! I NEVER would have thought of my thyroid.
Posted by: Lauren at February 21, 2008 02:39 AM
maybe its your thyroid.

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. I would suggest having you checked for allergies, maybe the fainting in only due to fluid near the inner ear.
I also had an episode about 8 years ago, which was Vasculitis (inflamation and leaking in the blood vessels) in my head. The pain was even worse than labor! And, the pain was so sharp and sudden it knocked me off my feet. My doctor said that if (when they had done a blood test) they had done a SED Rate, the ER would have known what the problem was. Problem was they didn't know what was wrong with me and I was being prepped for brain surgery. During that time the Neurosurgen figured it out and I didn't need surgery, just steriods to reduce the inflamation. They said the Vasculitis was caused by a virus gone wrong.
Where's Dr. House when you need him?!!

Hi Lauren,
I had something kind of like this last summer...I felt dizzy, had pressure in my head, etc and no one could diagnose me! They did an MRI, CT scan, blood work, treated me for vertigo (even though I wasn't spinning), the works. I finally went to an ENT (Ears, Nose, and Throat) specialist who....dum dum dum...treated me for a very bad sinus infection that was also affecting my ears. And that was it! Some antibiotics and a nasal steroid spray later and I was good to go! It was super frustrating though, because they could have given me antibiotics weeks earlier to save me from all that.
If it's not your thyroid, I hope it's something as simple. Maybe TMJ or sinus issues?
Feel better!
~Rosie

Thanks so much Rosie! I'm so glad someone said something about sinuses because I was thinking that too! Sometimes I would feel the pressure right where my sinuses are on my forehead and I asked but was told it was highly unlikely that a sinus infection would cause all my crazy passing out symptoms. The only thing that worries me is that I had bloodwork done that didn't indicate that I'm fighting off any sort of infection. I know you said you got bloodwork too, did you have the same results but still had a sinus infection? Thanks again!
